Dr. Carlos "Lobo" Cruz-Noguez is a professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Alberta. He holds a BSc and MSc in Civil Engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico and a PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno (2010). Prior to joining the University of Alberta in 2013, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Carleton University with the Canadian Seismic Research Network.
Dr. Lobo specializes in the analysis and design of damage-resistant concrete and masonry elements, large-scale and component testing, finite-element modeling, and the application of innovative materials in resilient structures. In 2017, he was appointed as the Masonry Contractors Association of Alberta (MCAA) Endowed Chair, and in 2018, Dr. Cruz-Noguez established The Masonry Centre at the University of Alberta. The Centre comprises 6 professors and more than 30 graduate students, conducting research in structural engineering, composite materials, lean construction, reliability, building science, automation, and robotics. Under his leadership, the Centre has secured over $4.8 million in funding since its inception.
Dr. Lobo holds several professional committee positions: ACI Subcommittee 440-0F (FRP-Repair-Strengthening); Research Committee of TMS 402; and CSA S304, Design of Masonry Structures. His contributions to education have been recognized with multiple faculty- and university-wide teaching awards.
Since 2024, Dr. Lobo serves as the Associate Dean, Education, of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences at the University of Alberta, where he specializes in the creation of interdisciplinary programs, which addresses pressing global issues (sustainability, clean energy, data science, and AI).
